Announcement to Thai and International jazz music fans. The 10th Anniversary of TIJC – the Thailand International Jazz Conference will be on January 26-28, 2018. The conference includes 4 main signature events; Jazz Music Performances, Jazz Education Activities, Jazz Solo Competition and Jazz Camp
Dr. Narong Prangcharoen Dean of College of Music, Mahidol University, reveals that TIJC is an important event for music development and awareness in Southeast Asia. Since the first TIJC was held, the public has become more aware and appreciative of jazz music. This event inspires musicians to create new sounds, music for jazz society in Thailand and the world. TIJC focuses on the education of jazz, as a key tool to develop jazz in society. The success of TIJC is in the explosion of new jazz ensembles at all levels that has happened throughout Thailand.
‘This event is the result of collaboration from Jazz lovers around the globe. There will be workshops and master classes. All participants understand the importance of moving jazz forward and willing to be a part of this event without any hesitation. We never discriminate or leave out any other music institutions. We all come together and feel honored to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. Together we will build a brighter and stronger future for jazz and music industry. With this force, we can see the glimpse of being on an international level in the near future” Dr. Narong Prangcharoen stated the main purpose of this event.
Another TIJC 10th Anniversary organizer, Mr. Darin Pantoomkomol, Chair of the Jazz department at Mahidol University, introduced the headliners for TIJC 10th Anniversary – true jazz “Superstars” like saxophonist Will Vinson and his Quintet, featuring guitarist Mike Moreno, pianist Kevin Hayes, bassist Orlando Le Fleming and drummer Henry Cole.
The all-star TIJC lineup includes the Alfredo Rodriguez Trio from Cuba, and the Claudio Filippini Trio featuring Enrico Zanisi from Italy, appearing with the support from the Embassy of Italy in Thailand. Other highlights of TIJC are the collaboration between the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO) and Thai jazz group Pomelo Town. Together, they bring traditional Northern Thai music such as, “Noi Jai Ya” and “Say Lay Mao”, to life. These signature Pomelo Town works will be will be re-arrange for performance with the symphony orchestra by Dr. Narong Prangcharoen, Dean of College of Music, Mahidol University. The audience will get to experience Jazz with the Symphony which showcases jazz’s great ability to collaborate with and be all-inclusive, said Chair of Jazz Department.
TIJC is not just about enjoying world class jazz music, according to TIJC project manager, Noppodol Tirataradol, but it’s also about great activities such as workshops and master classes. The conference will include jazz performance classes; jazz composition and arranging classes, and jazz ensemble conducting classes all conducted by world renowned musicians. As for TIJC’s Jazz Competition, there are 2 categories – the Open and Junior Divisions. The Type A: Open Division category winner will receive 100,000 baht and the Type B: Junior Division winner will receive 50,000 baht.
“TIJC is not only the signature Jazz festival in Thailand but also the most important Jazz Education event, held each year. TIJC has grown tremendously and will continue to grow, not with the amount of capital but with strong content. The next step for TIJC is to become Jazz Education Center for everyone. There is also the idea to create a Jazz Big Band Camp for all the Jazz Ensembles in Thailand so they have spaces for them to perform” the Head of TIJC project said with hopes for future.
